Many museums around the world have spent a lot of time and patience making presentations of their art available for viewing on the web. It would be a pity if we did not avail ourselves of this fantastic opportunity to learn something and at the same time get a feeling about what these great museums have to offer. If you find yourself in Paris or London in the future maybe this journey in virtual reality can give you the desire to step in and see the work at close hand

Find out what impressionism is. Try and discover the names of the artists that became known as "impressionists" by visiting a number of art museums around the world. A good place to begin might be the Louvre in Paris. Here you will also find one of the most famous paintings in the world? The Louvre is a vey old museum from 1791 and very large so if you might keep to impressionism and impressionists in the first instance!

Afterwards you might visit the Tate Museum in London. When you have become familiar with a few impressionist names you can search for them in the index. The Tate was opened about a hundred years after the Louvre and the have two major groups of work, one dealing with English painting from the 17th Century and the other dealing with current international art.

Then you can take a trip to New York and look in on MOMA the Museum of Modern Art. It was founded 1939 and is the most recently built museum of those you have visited. If you go to ARTCYKLOPEDIA you will find a treasure of material on impressionism and impressionisits. Seeing reproductions on the screen, while impressive and often beautiful, cannot be compared to seeing the paintings in real life or even compared to illustrations in well printed books.
